sick penny

I mean to blog more often, honest I do but then I get to unpacking and the whole day is gone.  I always feel that blogging must be done in the morning…why is that?  Yesterday,  I spent the day doing what, I have no idea since I can’t really see anything concrete for my work but I didn’t stop all day and so I am sure the work is somewhere benefiting one of my sweet babes.

One of the things I have been doing is worrying.  Worrying about my cockatiel Penny.  My poor sweet Penny who Poppa got me a month before I had Christopher 7 and a half years ago to keep me from going nuts waiting for the day I could hold our new baby.  Penny is a lover, though only mostly to me, he is still very much a lover.  Most days, the first sound I hear is Penny singing every song in his repertoire and going through all of his phrases over and over until some sleepy head will shout and remind Penny that we are still asleep.

For the past few days, Penny has been very fluffy looking.  I have never seen him do that so I figured he was just cold, being a Floridian and all.  But then a few things caught Erica’s eye (our resident bird girl, as her siblings call her).  He was quite cranky and yesterday he started hanging out at the bottom of the cage.  Not good.  Birds never do that unless they are weak.  I woke up so many times to check on him as I thought I might find something tragic by morning and the vet would not open until 9.  A very long night lie ahead.

Thankfully, oh so thankfully, he greeted me this morning as the first rays of sun came up but his voice was very small and his breathing did not look good.  I kept him the entire night next to the heater and I am not sure if that helped but he was still with us.  I held him while the girls got ready to go to the vet and he seemed so very small.  He hardly moved in my hands and I could barely hold in my tears.  I gathered up all my strength and whispered to him that if he was tired and needed to go that he didn’t have to be strong for me.  I secretly hoped he would defy me.

We got to the vet and they did test after test on him and nothing.  We brought him home with antibiotics and something to help him recover though the vet told me she did not think it would work and mentioned the word that I don’t want to hear.  We have gotten him to eat and we are force feeding him water around the clock.   He does try to put on a brave show if any of the kids come to his cage and while the vet did her tests on him, he fought back and seemed almost normal but not so.  I check in on him every few minutes and each time I hold my breath just a little bit before I see him there looking back at me.

We are hopeful and have put him in the hands of Our Lord and the good Saint Francis.  We appreciate your prayers for our little bird if you can spare any.  He may be just a little bird but he holds a special little place in my heart, a place that is perfectly birdie shaped.
