Stash Bash – Make your own knitting needles tutorial

I’ve never met a crafter without a stash of some kind. This year my goal is to use up all the craft supplies I have spent money on that are taking up mental and physical space in my life.

As promised,  here is the tutorial on the handmade knitting needles.  My girls loved these so much that I will have to make some up for the boys since they have been “eyeing” their sisters Saint Nick presents.

These needles are so so easy to make really and so cheap.

You need some dowels (I get mine at the craft store)
Pencil sharpener
Wooden beads for the tops
Fine sandpaper
oil to polish (coconut, olive oil etc)

Cut your dowels to the size of needle you want.  I was able to get two sets of needles from one dowel.

Sharpen one end with the pencil sharpener

sand the tip slightly so its not sharp enough to hurt someone and then start lightly sanding the dowel so that it becomes very smooth.  Make sure to sand down the sides of the tip which you sharpened so that the yarn will glide on and off the needles easily.

Glue on the wooden beads to the other non-sharpened side.

Polish the needles with the oil.

So what have you been up to? I love to see what you come up with. I have added the Mr Linky to the bottom of this post for you to link up your Stash Bash projects.

Here’s what to do. There are no rules.
Just use what you have and try to not buy new supplies, unless you need it to complete a project that you are making from stuff you already have in your stash.

Thank you! When you finish your work with oil take linseed oil. It’s hardening and really closes the pores of the wood. Olive oil tends to expire. I received that tip by a carpenter myself.

    Wishing you luck!
