Restocking the larder

Sorry I missed posting my rhythms for Friday and Saturday as promised.  I had a little episode of vertigo.  Someone (who shall remain nameless) thought our house smelled too “natural” and sprayed a homemade air freshener from a chemical stew called fabric softener.  Apparently I found out that my one of my children likes the smell of this stuff on her clothes.  Growing up in a house where our clothes just smells clean means that she never smelled like her other friends and she wanted that smell.  So, she sprayed it and I breathed it in and ended up with a hot pain in my brain and I started feeling really dizzy. Within 10 minutes I was in full blown vertigo and in bed.  SO I promise to post my Friday and Saturday rhythm this week.

Today I had to go do my shopping since Saturday I was down.  I drove all the way to Whole Foods and so I took along the camera so I could share it with you.  I had lots to buy today and I took along my favorite shopping buddy.

I usually take my reusable bulk food bags with me but I left the bag of them in my foyer.  I was not happy thinking that these thin bags would break with my grains in it.  When I got home I had a ton of these little bags left over.  What can you do with these? anyone?

my favorite aisle at the store.  I spend a whole lot of time here since the bulk of what I buy is in the bulk bins.  I love buying exactly how much I need of nuts, grains or wheat.  It is also a lot less expensive.

woo-hoo our favorite breakfast granola is on sale.  This might seem really expensive but when you think that for $4.00 you are buying 16 ounces of it and the junky cereal in boxes costs about that much (unless you have a coupon) and those boxes are usually about 12 ounces, its not so bad.  Plus, a little granola with yogurt or milk fills you much more than a big bowl of cereal so you use less.

My favorite natural food colorings… anyone know of a cheaper source for these, I go through them fast and they are expensive

  new natural bristle tooth brushes.
Today I bought, wheat berries, wheat bran, quinoa, sesame seeds, popcorn, sweet brown rice, raisins, almonds, granola, yellow split peas, golden flax, large flake nutritional yeast, a hunk of parmesan cheese, two goat cheese logs, brown rice syrup,  sucanat, diced tomatoes, beans, pasta, some new sponges and a scrubber (hopefully more on this later), dishwashing liquid, castile soap, sesame candies, tooth brushes, and a few other things I can’t remember 🙂
What do you buy when you go to the grocery store?

Wow. I thought I was the only person on the planet (ok, not really) who ended up with vertigo after sniffing chemical concoctions. Yep, our clothes just smell 'clean', also. 🙂

Great ideas Courtney! My compost pile never gets the pulp from my juicer, the chickens love it and if its good for me then it good for them. I made plarn (yarn from plastic bags) years ago, maybe my girls can come up with a project to use it, thanks!

When I have those bags from the store (or the free newspaper they toss in our drive), I use them with my juicer to catch the parts after the juice is removed. Just rubberband it on the end and catch that flying stuff. 🙂 Then it can be taken to the compost pile and put to good use (the veggies and fruits, that is, not the plastic bag). The bag can be used again and again to catch leftovers at least until it gets a rip. You can also cut them into strips (check google for a proper cutting technique) and crochet with them. Perhaps a beach bag or a reusable tote for the store?

OK, super cute pics, but we gotta tip for ya on how to save more $ on bulk items. We used to do WF trips like yours, but now we monitor the monthly sales at our NEARBY health food store. When our favorite bulk items go on sale (organic popcorn and org. wheat berries for 99 cents per pound, etc) we have the store manager special order us a 10, 20, or 50 lb bag of it. Then we store it in air tight recycled food containers until we use it up. God bless!
