What do you do when you run into a project that you shouldn’t have time for because you already have 3 other projects very similar to it that you have not finished?  This was the case this week.  The girls quilts, which are almost finished but still need an edging and to be machine quilted have been laying, hanging over my banisters waiting to be finished for three very eager owners to use on their beds.  Every time I turn the corner, there they are inviting me to sit down and do a bit of work.

Then I take a small detour into a thrift shop and through no fault of my own (I promise) I run into a bag full of already cut squares of the sweetest vintage fabrics.  The tag says they are all fabrics from the 50’s though I do see some squares that have a 70’s and 80’s theme spread out in the pile of fabrics.  Someone must have been working on these squares for quite some time.  Cutting a square here and there as their time allowed.  There are definitely some very old fabrics in here as well as some that could have been from my own 80’s childhood.  Some squares seem to be from suit shirts and old clothing.  It begs the question.  Who cut all of these squares, why didn’t they finish it and who would ever donate a bag such as this one.

It was all too much for me.  Surely, I should buy it.  I look at the price tag, $4.  Yes, I will, and I will make this quilt.

After I layed them all out, they are exactly enough to make a small quilt for sitting or laying in the grass.  A distraction from the quilts I should be working on, yes.  It took only a day to get them all sewn up.  Really a few hours stolen here and there among other things that must be done.  Before I knew it, I was putting on the biased edging which was already in the bag.  You see, someone already planned this sweet little quilt out.  All I have done, is finish their work.

I have seen these little quilts before and most of them are not quilted but tied, so I tied it.  I love it and so does Matthew who has now caught his momma’s sickness and loves blankets and quilts.

So, what project called your attention this week?  Please do share, but even if you don’t I have decided to not linger on it.  I will just share with you and call it a day 🙂

Pinafores for a Pin-along

Last night during our Friday night movie night, I began to feel cold.  Not the kind of cold that goes away from a nice warm room or blanket.  No, the kind of cold that makes you want to go to bed.  In the middle of the night, my throat started to ache and one of my ears is following suit.  I am really not feeling well. This morning, I handed Matthew to one of the girls and gave myself permission to go back to bed.

The problem with that one, is that I must have really needed it and just woke up to realize that I never uploaded my pinalong post.  Alarming yes, but there has not really been all that much fuss or fanfare over it to begin with so, here it is.  It is super late in the morning and if by some off chance you were waiting to linkup, I am really sorry but something tells me that is not the case 🙂  Tis OK.

This week, I tried to summon spring by making one of my favorite dresses for the girls.  I have made dozens of these over the past 6 years when Alexandra first showed me a picture of one and asked “momma, you can make this for me right?”  And, yes I can.  It is a very simple construction.  Basically, the skirt is a tube with a hem on one end and gathering on the other.  I measure the hips and then times it by 4 and that is how much fabric goes into the skirt.  Then measure the waist so that it will be perfectly snug and decide how wide you want it and double that.  Fold over the waist and pin in place over the gathered top of the edge.  Make straps the length you want and sew them in place.  There is a bit more to it but that would give you enough of an idea to take off with it.  I hope 🙂
