I think these are my favorite craft from the party and I have heard from some of the moms on them so I think they may have been the boys favorites too.
If you have the mold or can borrow one, this 48 crayons will cost you $1. (Personal friends of mine, if you need to borrow the mold just ask) I got a box of 48 crayons (not name brand) from Michaels for $1.
OK, now get your willing assistants to start peeling off all the crayon papers. (Ignore the background in this picture, I have been redoing the living room and will have a before and after reveal soon).
This is the mold you need, I got mine on ebay. It can be used for chocolate, ice cubes, chalk, crayons, play dough, you name it.
Break up your crayon and put one crayon into each cavity. That’s right you can melt the crayons right in the mold. Bake in the oven at 250 for about 8 to 10 minutes, when it is all melted, take it out and put it either in the fridge if you are in a hurry to unmold them and make more or just let them sit out until the cool and harden.
I love the pictures Alexandra took, don’t you?
Be careful when unmolding the crayons, the heads break off if you don’t unmold them carefully. After a few chopped off heads, you’ll get the hang of it.
You could mix the crayon colors but I like them like this.
Each boy received a bag of crayons in their party bags

i so need these for back to scool…!!
it is really great idea. Thx for sharing. May I ask if I can still use the mould for making food after making this lego crayons.
I found out that the ice cube tray that says it can only be heated up to 140 F can be heated past that. 200 F for 20 minutes works well for my oven.
Crayola works best because they are made with higher quality ingredients for a vibrant color cheap crayons don't work as well-just a heads up to everyone
You know, when I made these for this party, I used the cheapo $1 a box caryons from Michaels and it worked perfectly.
Do you use non stick cooking spray in the mold prior to baking?
Hi!
I just made these & there is a clear layer on the back (I used the same crayons you did). Is that normal? Also, my crayons caved in on the back. Did yours do this? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Zosmama, I have heard from a few many people that a clear layer is left though it has never happened to me. Perhaps I should add a warning? My backs did not cave in. I put them in a low oven and just broke up the crayon into enough pieces to stand them up in the cavity and they turn out fine every time.
Yes, this is normal, although some people don't have this problem.
Thank you for the marvelous idea!! http://luzonsavana.blogspot.com
Thank you for this great post on a fun project.
I made these and also got a grayish waxy layer too. I noticed that moving the Lego crayons to the freezer immediately after they come from the oven minimizes it.
Are these the same molds they sell at the Lego store? If I borrow a mold from a friend, does it clean up nicely? Otherwise I will just purchase my own mold. Thanks, love the idea!
Gretchen, my molds have never gotten stained but I have heard from other people whose molds did get stained. Yes from the Lego store 🙂 Good luck!!
Yes, it does and it's also a very somewhat easy and creative way for making party favors. Without having to give plastic junk to people and instead fun and useful.
I think the heat was too fierce. I have just realised that your setting was Fahrenheit and my oven is Celsius. I am a dingbat 🙂 !! I put 1 crayon in each, but with the splatter they were half the size when I removed them. Have just done another batch and they are fantastic, apart from the clear wax, so I will get some different crayons tomorrow. Thank you, I love all your ideas, and will be trying many more over the next couple of week 🙂
Oh good Lotte!!! What a relief for both of us 🙂
Hi, I have just attempted to make these, and it's gone terrible wrong :-/ seems the crayons has splattered the inside of my oven with wax and the mould is in a bad way. Have you got any suggestions of where I have gone wrong? I am sure I had the oven at a lesser temperature than recommended. Could it be the crayons? Thank you, I so want to do these for my sons party 🙂
Oh goodness, no idea! I have made these many times and never even had a spill. How much crayon did you put in each mold and what temperature did you put the oven at? It needs to be very low. I used the cheapest crayons I could find but I think even the best crayons should not splatter as they just melt. Was the oven rack to high and perhaps the heating element was too close to the mold?
THis might be a silly question, but I've never done crayons in a mold. How do you know how full to fill with broken crayons so the backs look good?
I found that breaking up one crayon into pieces and sticking them in standing up worked the best. It is the perfect amount of crayon to fill the mold, otherwise just experiment with one. They melt so fast in the oven that you can play around with the amount.
Hi ! What a great idea ! You can also find Lego soap on ledindon.com http://www.ledindon.com/en/decoration-interieure/…
this is awesome. i so need these for back to scool.
I made a batch of Lego crayons with cheap Dollar Tree crayons. I had a clear waxy layer on the back of each man, is it because I used very cheap crayons?
Angie, I would think it would be the cheap wax in the crayons however, I use the cheap $1 crayons from Michaels and have never had this happen but not sure how they make the crayons at Dollar Tree. At least you only invested $1 : )
Just made a batch with Crayola and they were much better! The Dollar Trees must be too cheap, ha.
Thanks for that – it looks so easy! Does it damage the mould at all?
no, it does not
My 7 year old son is thrilled over this whole Lego party idea. Thanks for sharinf the great ideas.
I used a silicone mold I purchased on ebay. I heated for 11 mins at 350 degrees. This mold is meant to be heated up to 400.I think you can also microwave the crayons in the mold or heat in a can before pouring into the mold. Mine turned out amazing.. Thanks for this idea.I will post pictures on my blog today. http://www.simplyiced.blogspot.com
Which mold did you get? I saw ones on ebay that looked the same, but some said not to put in the oven at more than 140 degrees. do you think this matters?
Very nice. How many crayons are actually used for each mold?
Its just one crayon for each mold. Since crayons are cheap this makes a very inexpensive party favor.
I was wondering if you had any tips or tricks for cleaning these molds after using them to make crayons?
Thanks for the lego party inspiration! I linked back to you http://shopbonnenouvelle.blogspot.com/2011/10/leg…. Your blog is lovely and I appreciate you sharing!
