Week one of Handmade Christmas Craft Along and Giveaway

I’m so excited to get this years Handmade Christmas Craft Along going!!  I hope to inspire you and believe me I am looking forward to being inspired by all of you so whatever you are working on, take a picture, blog it or upload your picture to Flickr and post the link at the bottom of this post.
(picture from a spoonful of sugar designs)
Feel free to post this Craft Along challenge and the pledge to your blog or Facebook and add a link back to the Craft Along.
Here are the rules:

1. Gifts must be handmade by you, or,
2. Purchased from someone else who handmade it, check out Etsy or Artfire, go to a craft fair, or,
3. Upcycled items such as thrift store, antique store or garage sale treasures. If this one is alarming to you maybe you should think about what it really costs to make something new, the energy to make it, ship it, house it and how buying something pre-loved is using a resource which has already made its impact. My brother asked me if buying someone a, basket counts, I said yes but buy a pre-owned basket, really could you really tell if you received a new basket or not and if it was new would that make it a better basket?

The point is to use your imagination instead of buying all the mass produced stuff at the mall which every store is going to convince us we need and will make our Christmas this year perfect. Shop at home first. If you are a crafter, you have a stash. Most of us crafters don’t even know all the stuff that is in our stash so instead of heading over to the craft store, shop from your stash first.

Even if you do not have a blog or have nothing to link to, Please post your ideas or what you will be giving to your loved ones.

If you are game, here is the pledge:

I, state your name, pledge to:

To take a political stance against mass consumerism of Christmas
To give gifts that are unique, meaningful and full of love

Thank you so much for joining me in this Craft Along. Below is a linky list if you would like to add a link to your Craft Along project this week.  You may add what you are currently working on or even an old project that you would make as a gift again this year.

To add your link, copy and paste from your browser the URL from your blog post or specific Flickr picture and not your main blog URL so we do not have to hunt for your post.

Please include a link back here, to the Craft Along, in your blog post or Flickr photo page.

Now to the giveaway!!  This week, the handmade goodness is from Alex at The Cloverdilly

Alex makes the daintiest earrings and every time I wear them, I get comments or people just plain ask me where I got them.  She is offering one lucky winner their choice color of earrings.

I am making Roses for Mary for the children in my life. I got the idea from http://www.lapbooksforcatholics.com/other.html. The gist is this, I crochet eleven rosettes–ten for each Hail Mary in a decade and then one (larger or of a different color) to represent the Our Father bead. I am including a little pamphlet entitled The Rosary for Children by Our Sunday Visitor (which is available in our church gift shop) which has kid friendly pictures of each of the twenty mysteries. Kids can then lay out a "rose" for Mary with each prayer of a decade while mom and dad pray with the traditional rosary beads and repeat as necessary until the entire prayer is complete. They are so cute and my kids keep asking me why I am making so many flowers. I just smile.

I am already a follower of your blog. I am very excited to try Handmade Christmas this year! It's not my children that would mind…I'm a bit more worried about finding something for my parents and in-laws…Those earrings are darling! My daughter would LOVE them!

I love those earrings! And I love the idea of homemade Christmas gifts. When we were kids, my parents picked a different craft for us each year and we would make gifts for all the adults in the family (we only exchange "real" gifts with the kids in my dad's family). One year, I made floating candles for all the women while my brother made leather keychains for all the men – that was probably my favorite project! I never think of my family as being very crafty (and truly, we're not) but those gifts always came out great!

I made these leg warmers for my nephew out of leftovers in my stash.http://www.purlbee.com/the-purl-bee/2010/7/3/baby-leg-warmers-for-mila.htmlI couldn't wait two months to see them on his chubby legs though, so I'm going to have to make him something else…
