Spring blue

We returned midweek from our wonderful excursion to Florida with two day trips to South Carolina.  Unfortunately we returned to every single one of us coming down with the stomach flu.  At this point there has only been JP who has not come down with it and I am hoping it is just not going to get him at all.

Being in Florida was so amazing.  Back home with Alexandra, Lewis and baby Lewie but can you believe I did not take even one picture.  I think the sun being out all the time was all that I could handle and living in the moment does not go well with having a camera around ones neck.

We played outside all day and night.  We harvested loquats until the tree had no more fruit low enough to climb in and get.  We brought home bags of Seville oranges, waiting to be turned into marmalade.  I dug up and took cutting of many of my plants since spring is now on the calendar and someday it will be warm enough here to plant them.  We even got to harvest a whole lot of yuca from our cassava plants during a visit from Nate and Charlei.  So much fun and the feeling of being home was overwhelming.

The problem is my internal clock says its spring but I returned to Kentuckiana to find snow on the ground.  I wake everyday with no motivation to get anything done.  I have been beating myself up about it until Poppa told me he was worried about me.  He mentioned the winter blues and then I sat down to think about that.  I do really think I have the blues.  I need spring to come, finally and now.

There has not been much going on around here except for the aforementioned puke fest and all the cleaning up that goes with it.  No sewing or knitting.  No reading or anything close to creative.  Just a bunch of cooking, cleaning and cuddling until we all clear this terrible stomach ailment that has afflicted us.

Yesterday, I finally stepped outside because the sun peeked out from its usual hiding place.  The kids ran about until the sun went down and for the first time I found some green things growing outside.  They know right?  These plants know that it is coming.  Spring.  And it could not happen too fast for me.  Today is super cold again but friends have promised me that next week will be a different week.

So, I am holding to that promise and looking for the signs.  I hope to feel like sharing more than I have in the past two weeks though I promise you haven’t missed much at all.  Just a house full of sick kids and a momma with the spring blues.

Checking your blog almost daily, too. I would need light therapy if I lived in the North again, that's for sure. Miss you on the FL plant group but was thinking about all of the fruit trees and veggies you can plant up there that we can't back in FL. Was hoping to see plans on your garden in your new home. Enjoyed your posts about real food. Even ventured to the bulk foods section and knew exactly what to do thanks to your video. Check in to let you know you are ok!

I am in southern Ohio. It snowed last night and I feel like crying. I am so tired of being cold. The Blues are real in our region. I hope all of this makes for a more wonderful spring! It is long anticipated!
Every year I think I will buy one of those light thingies that you sit under. They used to call them SAD lights. Seasonal….Disorder?

Peggy, You are the second person who has recommended a SAD light and at least now I know what the SAD stands for 🙂

I'll be praying for you! Spring is indeed coming!! I live two hours south of y'all and have daffodils just opening now. March is the hardest month up here out of the deep south. You want spring to show up. It teases you. Then it snows or just gets cold again and again.

Cassidy, yesterday was cold, today is warmer and sunny. Holding on to hope

I can't beeeeelieve how big Olivia is getting. Precious!

We are praying for you all and especially momma! I'm sure it has been quite an adjustment from the Sunshine State and yes, you happened to join the land of winter wonder on a particularly bad year. We have family in the snow removal business and even they are complaining that they are ready for it to be over. Now that makes quite a statement! God bless you all!

We live near Chicago. Please know that this been the WORST winter I can ever remember in over 40 years. Since we live and work in a suburb just leaving the house for work most days required snow blowing ans shovel as a daily part of our morning routine. I am SO ready for spring too. hang in there it's coming. Yes, winter blues is real. Hope you all recover quickly!

    • farmishmomma March 30, 2014 at 4:46 pm #

Lorry, If I had to leave daily, I might have lost my mind by now. On bad days, I hunker down in my bed 🙂

We are still covered in a blanket of white stuff here. Though it is slowly melting away. Today it was 48, a heat wave. The kids spent 4 hours outside playing on our snow free deck. I had to drag the oldest in kicking and screaming for dinner. If only the sun would shine! I'm with you and so ready for spring. I hope you are all on the mend quickly. I had to up my vitamin d this year… Oh how I miss the sunshine.

FishDogFarm, Matthew has been on sun patrol. As soon as he sees it, he runs to the door yelling "ouside, ouside" and Lord help us if we try to keep him in. My poor baby, he loves being outside.

      • FishDogFarm March 30, 2014 at 7:05 pm #

It is sooo difficult this year!! Our youngest who is just 17 months has her running legs under her now and with the snow removed from the deck she just lives to be outside as well, it's all new and different for her. She stands with her head against the sliding glass door looking out saying "out, out" in the most pathetic little voice. I feel so bad because it is still so chilly for little fingers. Last night we had a good hard rain and the grass is finally starting to show through, praise the Lord!!!!! I'm so glad it was rain and NOT more snow!!
