to grandmothers house we go

Have I ever mentioned that we farmers don’t get a vacay?  It’s true!  Animals need to be fed, cows need to be milked and though crops can take a few days of no water, they don’t exactly like it very much.  It’s one of those little details that are left out of those books promoting the homesteader lifestyle.  It has been a whole year since I have been home to visit my parents in Miami and I have missed them so.

Lucky for me, Alex and Lewis had the time to house sit and Matilda went to summer camp, also known as a friends raw milk dairy where she is hopefully getting bred.  I went to see her on Saturday and she was out in the field with all her new cow friends.  I am expecting to receive at least a postcard but you know how forgetful cows can be 🙂

Anyhoo, this was definitely my chance to hit the road with the kids and they have been counting down the days all week.  Yesterday, I spent the day washing clothes and packing, making snacks to take with us and making sure everything on the farm was ok before we leave.  We got on the road pretty early and drove 2 hours to pick up my niece and nephew in Orlando so they could join their cousins for a week of  fun at Abuela and Abuelo’s house (that is grandmother and grandfather in spanish).  All together the trip from our house to my parents is 5 hours plus a little longer today waiting for my brother at our meetup spot so I could keep his kids.  I am so happy to spend time with my niece and nephew, each time I see them they seem double the size.

Tomorrow will be our first full day here but already I am sure I have recovered a few of the pounds I lost while I was sick a few days ago (have I ever told you how good Cuban food is?).  It is so good to hug my parents.  As soon as I walked in the door that familiar smell I get whenever I am at their house, filled my soul with joy.  I took a big breath in and immediately felt relaxed and happy.

I will post some of our adventures tomorrow.  Right now, I am taking a knitting project to bed and getting some rest.  Driving far distances really tires me out!

Yesterday, we woke to a blustery, rainy day.  As my children woke one by one, the complaints started to come in.  Tummies hurt, children did not want to eat and they did not want to play.  It can be no coincidence when more than two of them do not want breakfast (especially my really good eaters).  What is a momma to do?

In the midst of making tea and toast, this momma started to feel a wave of uneasiness in her own tummy and then we had three children laying on couches, in their beds and on the floor.  This momma was put to bed by Nick, Eddie and Erica who all took turns with Matthew making sure his diaper was clean, he was entertained and he had arms to sleep in while momma convalesced.

No words can relay how grateful I am for children who can take care of things when I cannot.  I spent the major part of the day staying still since that gave me the most relief, working on that sunsuit for Livie and watching episode after episode of Frontier House on the computer as the rain fell steadily outside the window.  I would have probably had a hard time staying in bed all day had it not been so dark and gloomy inside.  Have you seen Frontier House?  Are there any other farming type shows that you enjoy?
