the view from my window

I’ll tell ya, I have never been more surprised upon awakening than I was this morning.   I opened my eyes to Mateo’s sleepy little face nuzzled up next to my cheek.  I laid there watching him for a few minutes and then as he woke, I enjoyed his sleepy, almost drunken like smile.  At some point my eyes caught a wush of white flying by outside, looked out towards the windows and I tell ya, I almost fell out of bed from the shock.

Yesterday, the boys and I were out and about in long sleeved tshirts, no sweater, no feeling of being too cold, just a really nice sunny day with temps of about 47.  This morning it’s a winter wonderland out there.  How or when this happened, I can only imagine it snowed all night and snow it must have for there are about 5 inches of it already.  Five inches where yesterday there was grass.

I ran around waking the rest of my brood just to watch their amazement at it all.  Truly, this is breathtaking.  I hope we always feel this wonderment at seeing it though I am sure at some point it will become very much commonplace.

I felt the need to start a new project, though I have 3 others in my knitting basket.  I remembered that extra bulky yarn in my studio from my trip to the Purl SOHO.  A new cowl was cast on.  A cowl for me.  The yarn is Cascade Magnum and I originally bought this gynormous yarn thinking I would crochet a doily rug for my bedroom but then thought of how dirty it would get from admiring little feet visiting it.  I think I will make one eventually but perhaps a darker color, yes?

So, as I sit by the woodstove with peppermint tea in hand, I thank God for the seasons and for the view from my window.

IMG_1334 IMG_1321 IMG_1329I promised to share my dining room with you as well as a Pinterests inspired project with you yesterday but I had forgotten one little thing, yesterday was my birthday.  It was a wonderful relaxing day spent by me doing my best impersonation of Her Majesty while my precious subjects kept me fed, entertained and amused.  I mostly stayed away from the computer with some Facebook breaks spread out throughout the day.  The kid made presents were plentiful and they even made me a cake.  A grand indulgence of hours and hours of Downton Abbey were my gift to myself as I was a whole season behind.  Oh my, I was not ready for all that I saw and am still quite heart broken about Matthew Crawley.  Oh how I love that series.

On the subject of the dining room,  I can’t say it is done.  No, I still need to recover those chairs and with time I will figure out what will go where but it is painted and the shelves are up.  A thrift store excursion provided this perfect painting, how I love it so and now my Pyrex collection has been unpacked though I know I am missing a few pieces so there must be another box. The pictures are a bit confusing and I really didn’t think to take a before picture but the befores are the picture of Poppa walking through (during moving day) with yellow walls and the picture with our farmhouse table where the walls are terracotta colored.  The walls are yellow on one side of the wall and terracotta on the other.   I love the beige walls and having all the walls the same color is doing lots for my sanity.  I do tend to be quite plain sometimes and with so little light in this room, the beige really lightens things up a bit.

We are working on the living room a bit more with just one more (very high) wall to go and then I will start on the decorations.  I did post some art work I made for the walls a few days ago but for the most part, haven’t done much in there.

For the past few months it seems I have been looking at embroidery work and pinning a few on Pinterest.  Needing some decorations for the living room, I pulled out some fabric and started doodling, added a saying from a fellow farmer who is battling the city to grow food in his yard and viola.  I love embroidery but can’t do cross stitch to save my life.  I am almost done with it after all that time in bed yesterday to work on it.

The more I think of it, the more I think I will start a Pinterest challenge, perhaps a Pin Along.  What do you think?  I have gotten so many emails about reviving the Stash Bash, though hardly no one ever posted their projects.  I will give it a bit more thought and post more about it this week.

I am now off for some quiet time, away, all by myself… I am not good at being alone so we will see if I survive 🙂
