to grandmothers house we go

Have I ever mentioned that we farmers don’t get a vacay?  It’s true!  Animals need to be fed, cows need to be milked and though crops can take a few days of no water, they don’t exactly like it very much.  It’s one of those little details that are left out of those books promoting the homesteader lifestyle.  It has been a whole year since I have been home to visit my parents in Miami and I have missed them so.

Lucky for me, Alex and Lewis had the time to house sit and Matilda went to summer camp, also known as a friends raw milk dairy where she is hopefully getting bred.  I went to see her on Saturday and she was out in the field with all her new cow friends.  I am expecting to receive at least a postcard but you know how forgetful cows can be 🙂

Anyhoo, this was definitely my chance to hit the road with the kids and they have been counting down the days all week.  Yesterday, I spent the day washing clothes and packing, making snacks to take with us and making sure everything on the farm was ok before we leave.  We got on the road pretty early and drove 2 hours to pick up my niece and nephew in Orlando so they could join their cousins for a week of  fun at Abuela and Abuelo’s house (that is grandmother and grandfather in spanish).  All together the trip from our house to my parents is 5 hours plus a little longer today waiting for my brother at our meetup spot so I could keep his kids.  I am so happy to spend time with my niece and nephew, each time I see them they seem double the size.

Tomorrow will be our first full day here but already I am sure I have recovered a few of the pounds I lost while I was sick a few days ago (have I ever told you how good Cuban food is?).  It is so good to hug my parents.  As soon as I walked in the door that familiar smell I get whenever I am at their house, filled my soul with joy.  I took a big breath in and immediately felt relaxed and happy.

I will post some of our adventures tomorrow.  Right now, I am taking a knitting project to bed and getting some rest.  Driving far distances really tires me out!

Cooling off

I have a love hate thing with summertime.  It is hot and that makes working outside unpleasant but there is also the easiness of having less structure.  Somedays by the time we get our morning chores done outside and come back in, its time for another shower.   Sometimes you gotta just cool off and our favorite place to get a cold treat is Rita’s.  We actually had not been there since last year so I don’t feel bad about what is probably in our treat and honestly, it’s so yummy that I try not to even think about it.  It’s funny to say that there is a place that is our favorite when we only go there once or twice a year but we try to not eat out very much and tend to make our own treats.

Olivia wore the frock I made her for her Candyland birthday party and I was super happy that it still fits her. I love it when that happens.  She was so excited pearing into the case of flavors and of course got to try a little of each of her siblings ice cream.  Matthew of course did not get any ice cream since he has not yet had any food other than momma’s milk but her was happy to go along and watch everyone making faces and eating theirs.

Alexandra was free and was able to come along with us which I of course love.  Note to self * Alexandra cannot say no to a Rita’s outing*  Spending time with my oldest, married daughter is always time I cherish.

I am supposed to be building a second chicken tractor today but instead I am dreaming of all the knitting projects I could be doing and the sewing machine is calling my name.  I really should get out there…

See ya tomorrow!
