winter helmet, pointy or not

IMG_8303

IMG_8306 IMG_8308It has become apparent that there is nothing like the impending arrival of our first true winter to get me going in the finishing knitting projects department.  Every minute that we are not packing, enjoying the visits of friends or sleeping, I have been knitting 🙂

I started this winter helmet last week and it worked up just like I saw it in my head.  It was quick and easy and it fits Matthew and I only had to take it apart two times (well, three but who is counting).  The only problem was I didn’t like the way the decreases I chose for this pattern make it look on top.  Kinda pointy, no?  To me it reminds me of a knights helmet but the point on the top is throwing it off.  Yeah, I do not like it but it will stay that way this time. Why, well because we will be in cold weather in a short 20 days or so and that does not allow me to be picky 🙂

I immediately started another which has helped me to fix some problems with my note taking to write down the pattern and this time I chose to make the decreases by knitting two together followed by a slip slip knit and it now lies flat on the top instead of pointy, me likes…yes, I do.

I planned on making one for Chris and JP next not thinking that the big boys would want one, but they have told me in no uncertain terms that they do.  So, next up are four more winter helmets as well as what to call this hat.

Oh,  I used Brambleberry yarn for both of the helmets.  Matthew’s is Meadow Blackberry worsted and I can’t remember the color of Livie’s but it is also a Blackberry worsted.  Luckily, I have a few more colors that I ordered in my last yarn binge during their last sale so I can get started on the boys helmets ASAP 🙂

Yarning along with Ginny today on our 4th straight day of non-stop rain.

on the last day of summer

on the last day of summer:

–   had a special Momma and Olivia date to our favorite ice cream place.  A rare treat for us and some time to walk hand in hand together just Livie and Momma

–  decided it was time to chuck our stained, ancient napkins and made some really quick no sew ones from a vintage sheet which will remind us of summer for the months to come

–  moved the spoons, knives and forks to a permanent spot on the table so we aren’t always getting up at mealtime because we forgot to get someone cutlery.  Much better!

–  stopped to smell some sweet baby toes while Matthew was napping on the couch

–  was taught a new jig by Livie.  She is a great little dancer that girl of mine

–  watched the kids playing one last game of summer on the front lawn while I knitted in the dining room

–  lamented still not having a yarn swift or winder, having to use my handy dandy chair yarn holder instead 🙂

–  cast on a second winter helmet

–  got news that we would have not one surprise dinner guest but two that night.  Alex and Lewis decided to come over for dinner with baby Lewie and then Nate and Charlie called that they were coming to dinner also, I tell ya, friends and family, there is nothing better

–  JP got stung by a hornet but was very brave

– we enjoyed a meal of pot stickers, chinese fried rice and an asian salad followed by an evening of laughter and sharing complete with all the kids wrestling Nate on the ground for hours and covert water bomb assaults

I will miss these times when we are out in Kentucky by ourselves.  For now I enjoy them as much as I can.

I am still working on my momma who is having a hard time finding her blogging voice.  She has promised to get her post to me several times and I try to remember that not everyone is comfortable with sharing their words.  The recipes are coming… I promise.  I just need to keep encouraging her.
