in a weekend

This past weekend was cold.  Boy was it.  11 degrees for most of Saturday though there was a beautiful amount of sun which made being outside almost enjoyable.  These days I am so very grateful for the sun when we have it.  We spent all of Saturday running here and there.

Indoor soccer for the little boys,  where they get to run while I sit in the bleachers working on whatever hand work project I bring with myself.  I don’t go to their games very often though.  That is Poppas deal.  He loves it and loves to see them running out there.  I am the stand in when he can’t make it.  Excuse the blurry pics but this momma was sittting in front of the glass that separates the spectators and the players and it was quite grimmy.  On this Saturday morning, the score ended up 10-2 with my two boys scoring 7 of the 10 goals.  I didn’t even have time to pull my project out of its bag and I may have cheered more than I usually do.

The farmers market is usually my Saturday morning deal and even though it is winter here, there are still some indoor farmers markets up and running.  Since I was no where near home this Saturday I looked online and found there was one nearby, about 3 minutes up the road from the indoor soccer arena.  When we arrived, I could not believe it was outside.  There were only a handful of vendors (and who could blame them) but I was lucky enough to score the raw honey I was needing so badly since the honey pot at home had just gone empty the night before.  I almost bought eggs from a few ladies who looked very cold standing by their cooler full of farm products but then convinced myself that even though our chickens seem to be on a temporary strike, we are getting a few eggs a day and will just make do.   At another vendor I scored some beautiful cheeses and soap to share with Poppa on Valentines day.  Oh those cheeses are so amazing.  I may have to go to soccer again next Saturday 😉

This weekend was a great excuse to visit our favorite book stores, peruse the book shelves at home, work on some knitting and finish planning what we will be growing in just a few weeks.

I had planned to go over my seed order, which is already so very late, but my seed boxes are already stuffed and some of those seeds are a few years old.  I went through them and made two lists, one to buy no matter what and another to buy if the old seeds do not pass my germination test.  I am testing them right now and will know if they have any life left in them in a few days.  So many seeds.  I am waiting for that magical feeling that tells me that spring is around the corner but I have not felt it yet.  I have however felt the fact that I still have not ordered the rest of the supplies for sugaring season.  We marked 60 trees in the fall and I know the conditions will be right any day now.  I think this year we will have to make do however we can and hope for the best.  I would love some vintage sugaring supplies but I am really running out of time. Maple syrup will hopefully be upon us very soon and I am so excited!

I have been itching to start on that hat for my own head as I mentioned in my last post but the guilt of unfinished projects hangs on to me and its so hard to ignore.  I promised myself that I could start last night as long as I made some progress on one of my unfinished projects so I picked Livie’s blue hooded cowl to work on and I am halfway there.  For my hat,  a simple dark grey from my stash has been picked and I cast on thinking that I was not so very tired and could work on it in bed.  Poppa handed me my project a few hours after I had dozed off since it was on his side of the bed and I hope to work on it again tonight.  Winter won’t last forever and a hat for me is definitely over due.

This weekend was cold, fast and busy but there were also so many moments of quiet, rest and handwork and as the new week comes in I will sit and savor everything that we did together and for the good of our family, all in a weekend.
